Jon could feel the weight of all those tiny black eyes. He had not sighted the beast itself yet, though he sensed it was there, lurking, hidden, treacherous. The Mud Gate was open, and a squad of City Watchmen stood under the portcullis in their golden cloaks, leaning on spears. The men began to laugh.
The others were still in the common room when Jon returned, alone but for Ghost. A siege, a burning tower, an enemy with a torch. This time the Night's Watch will ride in force, against the King-beyond-the-Wall, the Others, and anything else that may be out there. He wished they were here now; the vault might not have seemed so dark and scary.
